We call atoi() on the server's display to get the socket but otherwise use the unmodified display for log file name, xkb paths, etc. This results in Xorg :banana being the equivalent of Xorg :0, except for the log files being in /var/log/Xorg.banana.log. I'm not sure there's a good use-case for this behaviour. Check the display for something that looks reasonable, i.e. digits only, but do allow for :0.0 (i.e. digits, followed by a period, followed by one or two digits). X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows,
which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program
can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server
(or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager,
which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons
and draggable titlebars and borders.
