The primary_ndx and approx_ndx fields from the XKM shape wire description are used as indices into the shape->outlines[] array without bounds checking against num_outlines. Exploiting this (if it can be exploited) requires a malicious xkbcomp - the path of which is built-in at compile time. There are lower-hanging targets than trying to exploit through an XKM file. X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows, which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server (or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager, which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons and draggable titlebars and borders.
