c0e075c902 all: drop emacs file variables from source files
We no longer add these. If you use Emacs, configure it yourself.

Also, due to our "smart-tab" usage the editor anyway does a subpar
job handling our tabs. However, on the upside every user can choose
whatever tab-width he/she prefers. If "smart-tabs" are used properly
(like we do), every tab-width will work.

No manual changes, just ran commands:

d984b2ce4a shared: move most of "shared/nm-utils" to "shared/nm-glib-aux"
From the files under "shared/nm-utils" we build an internal library
that provides glib-based helper utilities.

Move the files of that basic library to a new subdirectory
"shared/nm-glib-aux" and rename the helper library "libnm-core-base.la"
to "libnm-glib-aux.la".

Reasons:

 - the name "utils" is overused in our code-base. Everything's an
   "utils". Give this thing a more distinct name.

 - there were additional files under "shared/nm-utils", which are not
   part of this internal library "libnm-utils-base.la". All the files
   that are part of this library should be together in the same
   directory, but files that are not, should not be there.

 - the new name should better convey what this library is and what is isn't:
   it's a set of utilities and helper functions that extend glib with
   funcitonality that we commonly need.

There are still some files left under "shared/nm-utils". They have less
a unifying propose to be in their own directory, so I leave them there
for now. But at least they are separate from "shared/nm-glib-aux",
which has a very clear purpose.

f5e8bbc8e0 libnm,core: enable "onlink" flags also for IPv6 routes
Previously, onlink (RTNH_F_ONLINK) did not work for IPv6.
In the meantime, this works in kernel ([1], [2]). Enable it also
in NetworkManager.

ac4a1deba0 platform: add NMPlatformObjWithIfindex helper structure for handling NMPObject types
Until now, all implemented NMPObject types have an ifindex field (from
links, addresses, routes, qdisc to tfilter).

The NMPObject structure contains a union of all available types, that
makes it easier to down-case from an NMPObject pointer to the actual
content.

The "object" field of NMPObject of type NMPlatformObject is the lowest
common denominator.

We will add NMPlatformRoutingRules (for policy routing rules). That type
won't have an ifindex field.

Hence, drop the "ifindex" field from NMPlatformObject type. But also add
a new type NMPlatformObjWithIfindex, that can represent all types that
have an ifindex.

d25ed0820c all: don't use "static inline" in source files
For static functions inside a module, the compiler determines on its own
whether to inline the function.

Also, "inline" was used at some places that don't immediatly look like
candidates for inlining. It was most likely a copy&paste error.

3102b49f62 core: allow addresses with zero prefix length
There is really no problem here, allow it.

Previously we would assert against a non-zero prefix length.
But I am not sure that all callers really ensured that this
couldn't happen. Anyway, there is no problem we such addresses,
really.

Only we need to make sure that nm_ip4_config_add_dependent_routes()
and nm_ip6_config_add_dependent_routes() don't add prefix routes for
such addresses (which is the case now).

a51c09dc12 all: don't use static buffer for nm_utils_inet*_ntop()
While nm_utils_inet*_ntop() accepts a %NULL buffer to fallback
to a static buffer, don't do that.

I find the possibility of using a static buffer here error prone
and something that should be avoided. There is of course the downside,
that in some cases it requires an additional line of code to allocate
the buffer on the stack as auto-variable.

they were inconveniently printing to stdout and so the output was not
ordered in the journal.

Implement a unified nm_ip_config_dump() that logs through the usual
logging mechanism.

6169cd570f core: nm-ip4-config: consider dns-related differences as relevant
The DNS manager reacts to NM_DEVICE_IP4_CONFIG_CHANGED events, which
are generated when there is a relevant change to an IP4 configuration.

Until now, changes to the mdns,llmnr properties were not
considered relevant (and neither minor, this is already a bug).

Promote them to relevant so that the DNS manager is notified and will
rewrite the DNS configuration when one of this properties changes.

Note that the DNS priority should be considered relevant and added
into the checksum as well, but is a problem right now because in the
DNS manager we rely on the fact that an empty configuration (i.e. just
created) has a zero checksum. This is needed to avoid rewriting
resolv.conf when there is no change. The DNS priority initial value
depends on the connection type (VPN or not), so it's a bit difficult
to add it to checksum maintaining the assumption of checksum(empty)=0.
This should be improved in the future.

b9e6433a02 core: handle route metric when reapplying dynamic IP methods
For dynamic IP methods (DHCP, IPv4LL, WWAN) the route metric is set at
activation/renewal time using the value from static configuration. To
support runtime change we need to update the dynamic configuration in
place and tell the DHCP client the new value to use for future
renewals.

4eeb4b1bdd all: avoid byte ordering issue for IP4Config's Nameservers/WinsServers on D-Bus
Some properties in NetworkManager's D-Bus API are IPv4 addresses
in network byte order (big endian). That is problematic.

It is no problem, when the NetworkManager client runs on the same
host. That is the case with libnm, which does not support to be used
remotely for the time being.

It is a problem for an application that wants to access the D-Bus
interface of NetworkManager remotely. Possibly, such an application
would be implemented in two layers:

 - one layer merely remotes D-Bus, without specific knowledge of
   NetworkManager's API.

 - a higher layer which accesses the remote D-Bus interface of NetworkManager.
   Preferably it does so in an agnostic way, regardless of whether it runs
   locally or remotely.

When using a D-Bus library, all accesses to 32 bit integers are in
native endianness (regardless of how the integer is actually encoded
on the lower layers). Likewise, D-Bus does not support annotating integer
types in non-native endianness. There is no way to annotate an integer
type "u" to be anything but native order.
That means, when remoting D-Bus at some point the endianness must be
corrected.
But by looking at the D-Bus introspection alone, it is not possible
to know which property need correction and which don't. One would need
to understand the meaning of the properties.

That makes it problematic, because the higher layer of the application,
which knows that the "Nameservers" property is supposed to be in network
order, might not easily know, whether it must correct for endianness.

Deprecate IP4Config properties that are only accessible with a particular
endianness, and add new properties that expose the same data in an
agnostic way.

Note that I added "WinsServerData" to be a plain "as", while
"NameserverData" is of type "aa{sv}". There is no particularly strong
reason for these choices, except that I could imagine that it could be
useful to expose additional information in the future about nameservers
(e.g. are they received via DHCP or manual configuration?). On the other
hand, WINS information likely won't get extended in the future.

Also note, libnm was not modified to use the new D-Bus fields. The
endianness issue is no problem for libnm, so there is little reason to
change it (at this point).

62a4f2652f core: use nm_gobject_notify_together() in NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config
nm_gobject_notify_together() freezes the notifications to emit both
notification signals together. That matters for NMDBusObject base
class, which hooks into dispatch_properties_changed() to emit a combined
"PropertiesChanged" signal.

Note, that during calls like nm_ip4_config_replace(), we already
froze/thawed the notifications. So, this change adds unnecessary
freeze/thaw calls, because signal emition is already frozen.
That is a bit ugly, because g_object_freeze_notify() is more heavy
than I'd wish it would be.

Anyway, for other places, like nm_ip4_config_reset_routes() that is
not the case. And correctness trumps performance.

Ultimately, the issue there is that we use NMIP4Config / NMIP6Config
both to track internal configuration, and to expose it on D-Bus.
The majority of created NMIP4Config / NMIP6Config instances won't get
exported, and but still pay an unnecessary overhead. The proper solution
to minimize the overhead would be, to separate these uses.

e1c7a2b5d0 all: don't use gchar/gshort/gint/glong but C types
We commonly don't use the glib typedefs for char/short/int/long,
but their C types directly.

One could argue that using the glib typedefs is preferable in
public API (of our glib based libnm library) or where it clearly
is related to glib, like during

  g_object_set (obj, PROPERTY, (gint) value, NULL);

However, that argument does not seem strong, because in practice we don't
follow that argument today, and seldomly use the glib typedefs.
Also, the style guide for this would be hard to formalize, because
"using them where clearly related to a glib" is a very loose suggestion.

Also note that glib typedefs will always just be typedefs of the
underlying C types. There is no danger of glib changing the meaning
of these typedefs (because that would be a major API break of glib).

A simple style guide is instead: don't use these typedefs.

454195c09d device: don't capture resolve.conf for initial device config
This was called by via

  ...
  - manager:recheck_assume_connection()
    - manager:get_existing_connection()
      - nm_device_capture_initial_config()
        - update_ext_ip_config(initial=TRUE)

and would parse resolv.conf, and try to fill the device IP config
with nameservers and dns-options.

But why? It would only have effect if NM was started with
nm_dns_manager_get_resolv_conf_explicit(), but is that really sensible?
And it would only take effect on devices that have a default route.
And for what is this information even used?

Let's not do it this way. If we need this information for assuming or
external sys-iface mode, then it should be explicitly loaded at the
appropriate moment.

For now, drop it and see what breaks. Then we can fix it properly. If
it even matters.

57ab9fd60f core/dbus: rework creating numbered D-Bus export path by putting counter into class
I dislike the static hash table to cache the integer counter for
numbered paths. Let's instead cache the counter at the class instance
itself -- since the class contains the information how the export
path should be exported.

However, we cannot use a plain integer field inside the class structure,
because the class is copied between derived classes. For example,
NMDeviceEthernet and NMDeviceBridge both get a copy of the NMDeviceClass
instance. Hence, the class doesn't contain the counter directly, but
a pointer to one counter that can be shared between sibling classes.

297d4985ab core/dbus: rework D-Bus implementation to use lower layer GDBusConnection API
Previously, we used the generated GDBusInterfaceSkeleton types and glued
them via the NMExportedObject base class to our NM types. We also used
GDBusObjectManagerServer.

Don't do that anymore. The resulting code was more complicated despite (or
because?) using generated classes. It was hard to understand, complex, had
ordering-issues, and had a runtime and memory overhead.

This patch refactors this entirely and uses the lower layer API GDBusConnection
directly. It replaces the generated code, GDBusInterfaceSkeleton, and
GDBusObjectManagerServer. All this is now done by NMDbusObject and NMDBusManager
and static descriptor instances of type GDBusInterfaceInfo.

This adds a net plus of more then 1300 lines of hand written code. I claim
that this implementation is easier to understand. Note that previously we
also required extensive and complex glue code to bind our objects to the
generated skeleton objects. Instead, now glue our objects directly to
GDBusConnection. The result is more immediate and gets rid of layers of
code in between.
Now that the D-Bus glue us more under our control, we can address issus and
bottlenecks better, instead of adding code to bend the generated skeletons
to our needs.

Note that the current implementation now only supports one D-Bus connection.
That was effectively the case already, although there were places (and still are)
where the code pretends it could also support connections from a private socket.
We dropped private socket support mainly because it was unused, untested and
buggy, but also because GDBusObjectManagerServer could not export the same
objects on multiple connections. Now, it would be rather straight forward to
fix that and re-introduce ObjectManager on each private connection. But this
commit doesn't do that yet, and the new code intentionally supports only one
D-Bus connection.
Also, the D-Bus startup was simplified. There is no retry, either nm_dbus_manager_start()
succeeds, or it detects the initrd case. In the initrd case, bus manager never tries to
connect to D-Bus. Since the initrd scenario is not yet used/tested, this is good enough
for the moment. It could be easily extended later, for example with polling whether the
system bus appears (like was done previously). Also, restart of D-Bus daemon isn't
supported either -- just like before.

Note how NMDBusManager now implements the ObjectManager D-Bus interface
directly.

Also, this fixes race issues in the server, by no longer delaying
PropertiesChanged signals. NMExportedObject would collect changed
properties and send the signal out in idle_emit_properties_changed()
on idle. This messes up the ordering of change events w.r.t. other
signals and events on the bus. Note that not only NMExportedObject
messed up the ordering. Also the generated code would hook into
notify() and process change events in and idle handle, exhibiting the
same ordering issue too.
No longer do that. PropertiesChanged signals will be sent right away
by hooking into dispatch_properties_changed(). This means, changing
a property in quick succession will no longer be combined and is
guaranteed to emit signals for each individual state. Quite possibly
we emit now more PropertiesChanged signals then before.
However, we are now able to group a set of changes by using standard
g_object_freeze_notify()/g_object_thaw_notify(). We probably should
make more use of that.

Also, now that our signals are all handled in the right order, we
might find places where we still emit them in the wrong order. But that
is then due to the order in which our GObjects emit signals, not due
to an ill behavior of the D-Bus glue. Possibly we need to identify
such ordering issues and fix them.

Numbers (for contrib/rpm --without debug on x86_64):

- the patch changes the code size of NetworkManager by
  - 2809360 bytes
  + 2537528 bytes (-9.7%)

- Runtime measurements are harder because there is a large variance
  during testing. In other words, the numbers are not reproducible.
  Currently, the implementation performs no caching of GVariants at all,
  but it would be rather simple to add it, if that turns out to be
  useful.
  Anyway, without strong claim, it seems that the new form tends to
  perform slightly better. That would be no surprise.

- Regarding RSS size, just looking at the processes in similar
  conditions, doesn't give a large difference. On my system they
  consume about 19MB RSS. It seems that the new version has a
  slightly smaller RSS size.

c03a534963 core: implement setting MDNS setting for systemd
The connection.mdns setting is a per-connection setting,
so one might expect that one activated device can only have
one MDNS setting at a time.

However, with certain VPN plugins (those that don't have their
own IP interface, like libreswan), the VPN configuration is merged
into the configuration of the device. So, in this case, there
might be multiple settings for one device that must be merged.

We already have a mechanism for that. It's NMIP4Config. Let NMIP4Config
track this piece of information. Although, stricitly speaking this
is not tied to IPv4, the alternative would be to introduce a new
object to track such data, which would be a tremendous effort
and more complicated then this.

Luckily, NMDnsManager and NMDnsPlugin are already equipped to
handle multiple NMIPConfig instances per device (IPv4 vs. IPv6,
and Device vs. VPN).

Also make "connection.mdns" configurable via global defaults in
NetworkManager.conf.

0ed49717ab all: support route-attribute "onlink" for IPv4
Kernel doesn't support it for IPv6.

This is especially useful, if you combine static routes
with DHCP. In that case, you might want to get the device-route
to the gateway automatically, but add a static-route for it.

cfe8546df9 all: extend hash functions with an NMHashState argument
We often want to cascade hashing, meaning, to combine the
outcome of various hash functions in a larger hash.

Instead of having each hash function return a guint hash value,
accept a hash state argument. This saves the overhead of initializing
and completing the intermediate hash states.
It also avoids loosing entropy when we reduce the larger hash state
into the intermediate guint hash value.

5c299454b4 core: rework tracking of gateway/default-route in ip-config
Instead of having 3 properties @gateway, @never_default and @has_gateway
on NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config that determine the default-route, track the
default-route as a regular route.

The gateway setting is the configuration knob for the default-route.
Since an NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config instance only has one gateway property,
it cannot track more then one default-routes (see related bug rh#1445417).
Especially with policy routing, it might be interesting to configure a
default-route in multiple tables.

Also, later it might be interesting to allow adding default-routes as
regular static routes in a connection, so that the user can configure additional
route parameters for the default-route or add default-routes in multiple tables.

With this patch, default-routes now have a rt_source property according to their
origin.

Also, the previous commits of this branch broke handling of the
default-route :) . That should be working now again.

2bdfc092d4 core: don't track route metric in ip-config
It's not needed. Whenever we add a route, we pass in the
route metric (for example, based on the device's configuration).
No need to merge and track it into the NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config.

The metric was only used in nm_ip4_config_create_setting()
and nm_ip6_config_create_setting(). In fact it's wrong to do
that, because it means we first capture some settings, and guess
the configured route metric. But we cannot do that. Our best
guess what a configured setting might be is -1.

9003dae6cd core: don't track route MSS in ip-config
The MSS is only set for VPN connections (by merging it in the respective
NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config).

It is also only used when setting the MSS of the default route.

Don't track that property in NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config, instead, set the
mss of the route directly in nm_vpn_connection_ip4_config_get() and
nm_vpn_connection_ip6_config_get().

There is a potential change in behavior here: NMDevice also consisdered
the MSS for the default route, but that would only be set if the MSS
gets merged from an vpn-ip-config. Which at most is the case for
iterface-less VPN types (libreswan). But even in that case, it doesn't
seem right to me to use the VPN's MSS for the device's default-route.

cc1ee1d286 all: rework configuring route table support by adding "route-table" setting
We added "ipv4.route-table-sync" and "ipv6.route-table-sync" to not change
behavior for users that configured policy routing outside of NetworkManager,
for example, via a dispatcher script. Users had to explicitly opt-in
for NetworkManager to fully manage all routing tables.

These settings were awkward. Replace them with new settings "ipv4.route-table"
and "ipv6.route-table". Note that this commit breaks API/ABI on the unstable
development branch by removing recently added API.

As before, a connection will have no route-table set by default. This
has the meaning that policy-routing is not enabled and only the main table
will be fully synced. Once the user sets a table, we recognize that and
NetworkManager manages all routing tables.

The new route-table setting has other important uses: analog to
"ipv4.route-metric", it is the default that applies to all routes.
Currently it only works for static routes, not DHCP, SLAAC,
default-route, etc. That will be implemented later.

For static routes, each route still can explicitly set a table, and
overwrite the per-connection setting in "ipv4.route-table" and
"ipv6.route-table".

8f1ef161f4 core: refactor parsing resolve.conf
- merge the IPv4 and IPv6 implementations. They are for the most
  part identical. Also, they are independent of NMIP4Config/NMIP6Config.

- parse the entire file at once. Don't parse it twice, once for the
  name servers and once for the options. This also avoids loading
  /etc/resolv.conf twice, as it would be done before.

7cd04ce014 core: inject route list to delete for nm_platform_ip_route_sync()
Whenever we call a platform operation that reads or writes the netlink
socket, there is the possibility that the cache gets updated, as we
receive netlink events.

It is thus racy, if nm_platform_ip_route_sync() *first* adds routes, and
then obtains a list of routes to delete. The correct approach is to
determine which routes to delete first (and keep it in a list
@routes_prune), and pass that list down to nm_platform_ip_route_sync().

Arguably, this doesn't yet solve every race. For example, NMDevice
calls update_ext_ip_config() during ip4_config_merge_and_apply().
That is good, as it resyncs with platform. However, before calling
nm_ip4_config_commit() it calls other platform operations, like
_commit_mtu(). So, the race is still there.

03e1cc96a5 core: fix handling IPv6 device-route and use correct route metric
Before commit 6698bf58bb, we would rely on
kernel to add the device-route for manual IPv6 routes. We broke that and now
kernel would still add the device-route, however nm_platform_ip_route_sync()
would delete it immediately after.
That is because previously nm_platform_ip_route_sync() would ignore routes
with rtm_protocol RTPRO_KERNEL. Now, it will sync and delete those too.

Fix that by adding the device-route like we do it for IPv4. This also
fixes an actual issue where the automatically added route always had
route-metric 256. Instead, we now use the metric from ipv6.route-metric
setting.

2cc1813340 core: workaround configuring IPv6 routes with "src" (RTA_PREFSRC)
Kernel does not allow to add IPv6 routes with "src", as long as the
corresponding address is still tentative (related bug rh#1457196).

The workaround for this is cumbersome. First, when we fail to add such a
route with "pref_src", we guess that it happend due to this issue. In
that case, nm_ip6_config_commit() returns the list of routes that could
not be added for the moment (but hopefully can be added later).

We track this list in NMDevice, and keep trying to merge the routes
back into ip6_config. In order to not try indefinitely, keep track of a
timestamp when we tried to add this route for the first time.

Another uglyness is that pending tentative routes don't explicitly block
activation. In practice they may do, because for these routes we also have
an IPv6 address that is still doing DAD, so the IP configuration is
still pending due to that.
