If a feature like Wi-Fi, OVS, team, etc. is disabled or no longer
supported, it is better to report an error when the connection is
added via nmcli than accepting the connection and complaining later
about a "missing plugin"; there is no plugin and the connection will
never be able to activate.
Example errors now:

Note that we don't touch libnm-core (the part defining the settings
and properties), as that defines the API of NetworkManager. The API
should not change according to compile flags.
nm_strv_find_first() is useful (and used) to find the first index (if
any). I can thus also used to check for membership.
However, we also have nm_strv_contains(), which seems better for
readability, when we check for membership. Use it.
Move the warning about the presence of ifcfg-rh profiles from the
plugin to NMSettings. In this way, it will be easier to implement the
migration option in the next commit.
"force_rename" parameter was not used previously, but it also was broken.
Fix it. We need to create a new NMSettingsStorage instance when the filename
changes, as the storage's filename is immutable.
No bad effects so far, it was unused.
But as it wasn't used, also no longer set the update_reason flag
NM_SETTINGS_CONNECTION_UPDATE_REASON_FORCE_RENAME. We didn't have the
force-rename behavior so far. This makes the flag totally unused, and
maybe should be dropped. It's kept for now, if only to show what could
be done.
We are passing to the plugin only 'sett_flags', which is the bitmask
of flags to change and works together with 'sett_mask'; however,
plugins interpret that value as the new flags value. The result is
that if there is no change needed (0/0), the existing flags are lost.
Simple reproducer:

Of course, blocking and synchronous code is much simpler. But it's also
fundamentally wrong to block while we talk to systemd-hostnamed.
Refactor to use async operations.
This will allow migrating a connection. If specified, the connection will
be confined to a particular settings plugin when written back. If the
plugin differs from the existing one, it will be removed from the old one.
Currently it is possible to specify a list of default settings plugins
to be used when configuration doesn't contain the main.plugins key.
We want to add a mechanism that allows to automatically load any
plugin found in the plugins directory without needing
configuration. This mechanism is useful when plugins are shipped in a
different, optional subpackage, to automatically use them.
With such mechanism, the actual list of plugins will be determined
(in order of evaluation):
1. via explicit user configuration in /etc, if any
2. via distro configuration in /usr, if any
3. using the build-time default, if any
4. looking for known plugins in /usr/lib
We have at least static and transient hostnames. Let's be clear which
one we are talking about.
Note that also NM_SETTINGS_HOSTNAME gets renamed to
NM_SETTINGS_STATIC_HOSTNAME, because it seems clearer.
The only purpose of NM_SETTINGS_STATIC_HOSTNAME is to be the backing
property for the "Hostname" D-Bus property for the NMDBusObject glue.
So, while the new name makes more sense to me, it's now also
inconsistent with it's primary use (the D-Bus property). Still...
We use clang-format for automatic formatting of our source files.
Since clang-format is actively maintained software, the actual
formatting depends on the used version of clang-format. That is
unfortunate and painful, but really unavoidable unless clang-format
would be strictly bug-compatible.
So the version that we must use is from the current Fedora release, which
is also tested by our gitlab-ci. Previously, we were using Fedora 34 with
clang-tools-extra-12.0.1-1.fc34.x86_64.
As Fedora 35 comes along, we need to update our formatting as Fedora 35
comes with version "13.0.0~rc1-1.fc35".
An alternative would be to freeze on version 12, but that has different
problems (like, it's cumbersome to rebuild clang 12 on Fedora 35 and it
would be cumbersome for our developers which are on Fedora 35 to use a
clang that they cannot easily install).
The (differently painful) solution is to reformat from time to time, as we
switch to a new Fedora (and thus clang) version.
Usually we would expect that such a reformatting brings minor changes.
But this time, the changes are huge. That is mentioned in the release
notes [1] as

The name prefix "nmtst_*" is reserved for test helpers and stub
function. Such functions should not be in the actual build artifacts,
like the NetworkManager binary.
Instead, nmtst_connection_assert_unchanging() is not a test helper. It
is a assertion function that is only enabled with NM_MORE_ASSERTS
builds. That's different.
Rename.
In other words,
$ nm src/core/NetworkManager src/libnm-client-impl/.libs/libnm.so | grep nmtst
should give no results.
Naming is important, because the name of a thing should give you a good
idea what it does. Also, to find a thing, it needs a good name in the
first place. But naming is also hard.
Historically, some strv helper API was named as nm_utils_strv_*(),
and some API had a leading underscore (as it is internal API).
This was all inconsistent. Do some renaming and try to unify things.
We get rid of the leading underscore if this is just a regular
(internal) helper. But not for example from _nm_strv_find_first(),
because that is the implementation of nm_strv_find_first().

Note that no names are swapped and none of the new names existed
previously. That means, all the new names are really new, which
simplifies to find errors due to this larger refactoring. E.g. if
you backport a patch from after this change to an old branch, you'll
get a compiler error and notice that something is missing.
Configuration can have [device*] and [connection*] settings and both
can include a 'match-device=' key, which is a list of device-specs.
Introduce a new 'allowed-connections' key for [device*] sections,
which specifies a list of connection-specs to indicate which
connections can be activated on the device.
With this, it becomes possible to have a device configuration like:
[device-enp1s0]
match-device=interface-name:enp1s0
allowed-connections=except:origin:nm-initrd-generator
so that NM in the real root ignores connections created by the
nm-initrd-generator, and starts activating a persistent
connection. This requires also setting 'keep-configuration=no' to not
generate an assumed connection.
We have two GKeyfile files (timestamps and seen-bssids).
When a profile was deleted while NetworkManager was running, then
entries were removed from these keyfiles. But if a profile disappeared
while NetworkManger was stopped, then those UUIDs piled up.
This also happens if you have temporary connections in /run and reboot.
We need a way to garbage collect entries that are no longer relevant.
As the keyfile databases only get loaded once from disk, we will prune
all UUIDs for which we have no more connection loaded, on the first time
we write out the files again.
Note what this means: if you "temporarily" remove a connection profile
(without NetworkManager noticing) and restore it later, then the additional
information might have been pruned. There is no way how NetworkManager
could know that this UUID is coming back. The alternative is what we did
before: pile them up indefinitely. That seems more problematic.
This function is badly named, because it has no NMHostnameManager self
argument. It's just a simple function that entirely operates on a string
argument.
Move it away from "nm-hostname-manager.h" to "libnm-glib-aux/nm-shared-utils.h".
Hostname handling is complicated enough. Simple string validation
functions should not obscure the view on the complicated parts.
We now have a cached list of NMSettingsConnection instances,
sorted by their autoconnect priority.
However, the sort order nm_settings_connection_cmp_autoconnect_priority()
depends on various properties of the connection:
- "connection.autoconnect" and "connection.autoconnect-priority"
- the timestamp
- "connection.uuid"
These properties almost never change, so it's a waste that every call
to nm_settings_get_connections_sorted_by_autoconnect_priority() needs
to check whether the sort order is still satisfied.
We can do better by tracking when the sort order might have been
destroyed and only check in those (much fewer) cases.
Note that we end up calling nm_settings_get_connections_sorted_by_autoconnect_priority()
a lot, so this makes a difference.
Turns out, we call nm_settings_get_connection_clone() *a lot* with sort order
nm_settings_connection_cmp_autoconnect_priority_p_with_data().
As we cache the (differently sorted) list of connections, also cache
the presorted list. The only complication is that every time we still
need to check whether the list is still sorted, because it would be
more complicated to invalidate the list when an entry changes which
affects the sort order. Still, such a check is usually successful
and requires "only" N-1 comparisons.
D-Bus 1.3.1 (2010) introduced the standard "PropertiesChanged" signal
on "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties". NetworkManager is old, and predates
this API. From that time, it still had it's own PropertiesChanged signal
that are emitted together with the standard ones. NetworkManager
supports the standard PropertiesChanged signal since it switched to
gdbus library in version 1.2.0 (2016).
These own signals are deprecated for a long time already ([1], 2016), and
are hopefully not used by anybody anymore. libnm-glib was using them and
relied on them, but that library is gone. libnm does not use them and neither
does plasma-nm.
Hopefully no users are left that are affected by this API break.

Along with NM_SETTINGS_CONNECTION_UPDATE_REASON_RESET_SYSTEM_SECRETS
and NM_SETTINGS_CONNECTION_UPDATE_REASON_RESET_AGENT_SECRETS, which can
be used in the NMSettingConnection's "updated" handlers to track secrets
updates, add NM_SETTINGS_CONNECTION_UPDATE_REASON_UPDATE_NON_SECRET so
that the handlers can tell when something other than secrets has been
updated in the connection.
It can also potentially be used in _connection_changed_update in
src/core/settings/nm-settings.c to stop emitting the
NetworkManager.Settings.Connection.Updated() dbus signal if only secrets
are being updated (on agent queries etc.) if it is deemed to be correct.
Review and replace usages of the two nm_connection_to_dbus() flags
marked deprecated in commit 84648e562c98 ('libnm: Refactor
NM_CONNECTION_SERIALIZE_* flags'):
NM_CONNECTION_SERIALIZE_NO_SECRETS and
NM_CONNECTION_SERIALIZE_ONLY_SECRETS.
"libnm-core/" is rather complicated. It provides a static library that
is linked into libnm.so and NetworkManager. It also contains public
headers (like "nm-setting.h") which are part of public libnm API.
Then we have helper libraries ("libnm-core/nm-libnm-core-*/") which
only rely on public API of libnm-core, but are themself static
libraries that can be used by anybody who uses libnm-core. And
"libnm-core/nm-libnm-core-intern" is used by libnm-core itself.
Move "libnm-core/" to "src/". But also split it in different
directories so that they have a clearer purpose.
The goal is to have a flat directory hierarchy. The "src/libnm-core*/"
directories correspond to the different modules (static libraries and set
of headers that we have). We have different kinds of such modules because
of how we combine various code together. The directory layout now reflects
this.
Before there was a licensing conflict between the keyfile code
(libnm-keyfile) and libnm. The latter would require LGPL-2.1+ while
keyfile code was GPL-2.0+.
Consequently we were linking libnm-keyfile into the daemon, but not in
libnm.so.
This conflict has been resolved and keyfile API is part of libnm.so.
There is no more need to build a separate (intermediary) library. Merge
them.
This also makes sense because keyfile code needs access to private code
from libnm-core. It is closely tied to libnm-core, so that building them
separate makes no sense (anymore).
Currently "src/" mostly contains the source code of the daemon.
I say mostly, because that is not true, there are also the device,
settings, wwan, ppp plugins, the initrd generator, the pppd and dhcp
helper, and probably more.
Also we have source code under libnm-core/, libnm/, clients/, and
shared/ directories. That is all confusing.
We should have one "src" directory, that contains subdirectories. Those
subdirectories should contain individual parts (libraries or
applications), that possibly have dependencies on other subdirectories.
There should be a flat hierarchy of directories under src/, which
contains individual modules.
As the name "src/" is already taken, that prevents any sensible
restructuring of the code.
As a first step, move "src/" to "src/core/". This gives space to
reorganize the code better by moving individual components into "src/".
For inspiration, look at systemd's "src/" directory.
