52dbab7d07 all: use nm_clear_pointer() instead of g_clear_pointer()
g_clear_pointer() would always cast the destroy notify function
pointer to GDestroyNotify. That means, it lost some type safety, like

   GPtrArray *ptr_arr = ...

   g_clear_pointer (&ptr_arr, g_array_unref);

Since glib 2.58 ([1]), g_clear_pointer() is also more type safe. But
this is not used by NetworkManager, because we don't set
GLIB_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED to 2.58.

We have nm_clear_pointer() to avoid this issue for a long time (pre
1.12.0). Possibly we should redefine in our source tree g_clear_pointer()
as nm_clear_pointer(). However, I don't like to patch glib functions
with our own variant. Arguably, we do patch g_clear_error() in
such a manner. But there the point is to make the function inlinable.

Also, nm_clear_pointer() returns a boolean that indicates whether
anything was cleared. That is sometimes useful. I think we should
just consistently use nm_clear_pointer() instead, which does always
the preferable thing.

Replace:

0f7994328d shared: move nm-dbus-auth-subject to shared/nm-libnm-core-intern
Move it to shared as it's useful for clients as well.

Move and rename nm_dbus_manager_new_auth_subject_from_context() and
nm_dbus_manager_new_auth_subject_from_message() in nm-dbus-manager.c
as they're needed there.

The abbreviations "ns" and "ms" seem not very clear to me. Spell them
out to nsec/msec. Also, in parts we already used the longer abbreviations,
so it wasn't consistent.

0dbb870f82 dbus-manager: drop unused private-socket functions from "nm-dbus-manager.c"
These functions are now unused. Drop them.

Also, if we ever reintroduce private unix socket, we sure won't use
GDBusProxy. Good riddance.

c0e075c902 all: drop emacs file variables from source files
We no longer add these. If you use Emacs, configure it yourself.

Also, due to our "smart-tab" usage the editor anyway does a subpar
job handling our tabs. However, on the upside every user can choose
whatever tab-width he/she prefers. If "smart-tabs" are used properly
(like we do), every tab-width will work.

No manual changes, just ran commands:

49ed2079ab core/dbus: let NMDBusManager create a D-Bus connection in "configure-and-quit=true" mode
Note that various components (NMFirewallManager, NMAuthManager,
NMConnectivity, etc.pp) all request their own GDBusConnection from
glib's G_BUS_TYPE_SYSTEM singleton.

In the future, let them instead use the D-Bus connection that
NMDBusManager already has.

- NMDBusManager also uses g_bus_get(G_BUS_TYPE_SYSTEM), so in practice this
  is just the same GDBusConnection instance.

- if it would not be the same GDBusConnection instance, it would
  be more correct/logical to use the one that NMDBusManager uses.

- NMDBusManager already aquired the GDBusConnection synchronously
  and it's ready for use. On the other hand, g_bus_get()/g_bus_get_sync()
  has the notion that getting the singleton cannot be done without
  waiting/blocking. So at least it involves locking or even dispatching
  the async reply on D-Bus.

- in "configure-and-quit=initrd" we really don't have D-Bus available.
  NMDBusManager should control whether the other components use D-Bus
  or not. For example, NMFirewallManager should not ask glib for a
  G_BUS_TYPE_SYSTEM singleton only to later find out that it doesn't work.

So if these components would reuse NMDBusManager's GDBusConnection,
then it must have the connection also in regular "configure-and-quit=true"
mode. In this case, we are in late boot and want do connectivity
checking and talk to firewalld.

d984b2ce4a shared: move most of "shared/nm-utils" to "shared/nm-glib-aux"
From the files under "shared/nm-utils" we build an internal library
that provides glib-based helper utilities.

Move the files of that basic library to a new subdirectory
"shared/nm-glib-aux" and rename the helper library "libnm-core-base.la"
to "libnm-glib-aux.la".

Reasons:

 - the name "utils" is overused in our code-base. Everything's an
   "utils". Give this thing a more distinct name.

 - there were additional files under "shared/nm-utils", which are not
   part of this internal library "libnm-utils-base.la". All the files
   that are part of this library should be together in the same
   directory, but files that are not, should not be there.

 - the new name should better convey what this library is and what is isn't:
   it's a set of utilities and helper functions that extend glib with
   funcitonality that we commonly need.

There are still some files left under "shared/nm-utils". They have less
a unifying propose to be in their own directory, so I leave them there
for now. But at least they are separate from "shared/nm-glib-aux",
which has a very clear purpose.

e04dc445ec dbus: cache GetConnectionUnixProcessID and GetConnectionUnixUser
We call GetConnectionUnixProcessID and GetConnectionUnixUser *a lot*.
And we do so synchronously. Both is a problem.

To avoid the first problem, cache the last few requests with each cached
value being valid for one second.

On a quick test, this saves 98% of the requests:

     59 GetConnectionUnixProcessID(*)
   3201 GetConnectionUnixProcessID(*) (served from cache)
     59 GetConnectionUnixUser(*)
   3201 GetConnectionUnixUser(*) (served from cache)

Note that now as we serve requests from the cache, it might be the case
that the D-Bus endpoint already disconnected. Previously, the request would
have failed but now we return the cached user-id and process-id. This
problem is mitigated by only caching the values for up to one second.
Also, it's not really a problem because we cache sender names. Those
are supposed to be unique and not repeat. So, even if the peer already
disconnected, it is still true that the corresponding PID/UID was as
we have cached it. We don't use this API for checking whether the peer
is still connected, but what UID/PID it has/had. That answer is still
correct for the cached value after the peer disconnected.

703178f5ca dbus: add nm_dbus_manager_get_dbus_connection() helper
The NMDBusManager owns a reference to the system bus. Expose it, so we
can use it. Note that g_bus_get() -- as alternative to get the systembus
singleton -- is asynchronous, and g_bus_get_sync() has an API that makes
one wonder what it does. Since we already have a reference to the connection
object we want to use, expose it.

dc0cdbb57e dbus: register object manager object before requesting dbus name
Working on NetworkManager 1.12.4 and sometimes (rarely), when creating
a NM client object before NetworkManager service start, this object will
never be running.
In that case, we can see the following log:
"[GLIB-GLib-GIO WARN] Error calling GetManagedObjects() when name
owner :1.5 for name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager came back:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:
No such interface 'org.freedesktop.DBus.ObjectManager' on object
at path /org/freedesktop".

Object Manager object shall be registered before requesting dbus name
to be sure that 'org.freedesktop.Dbus.ObjectManager' interface is present
when name owner change is received by libnm.

38273a8871 settings: use delegation instead of inheritance for NMSettingsConnection and NMConnection
NMConnection is an interface, which is implemented by the types
NMSimpleConnection (libnm-core), NMSettingsConnection (src) and
NMRemoteConnection (libnm).

NMSettingsConnection does a lot of things already:

  1) it "is-a" NMDBusObject and exports the API of a connection profile
     on D-Bus
  2) it interacts with NMSettings and contains functionality
     for tracking the profiles.
  3) it is the base-class of types like NMSKeyfileConnection and
     NMIfcfgConnection. These handle how the profile is persisted
     on disk.
  4) it implements NMConnection interface, to itself track the
     settings of the profile.

3) and 4) would be better implemented via delegation than inheritance.

Address 4) and don't let NMSettingsConnection implemente the NMConnection
interface. Instead, a settings-connection references now a NMSimpleConnection
instance, to which it delegates for keeping the actual profiles.

Advantages:

  - by delegating, there is a clearer separation of what
    NMSettingsConnection does. For example, in C we often required
    casts from NMSettingsConnection to NMConnection. NMConnection
    is a very trivial object with very little logic. When we have
    a NMConnection instance at hand, it's good to know that it is
    *only* that simple instead of also being an entire
    NMSettingsConnection instance.

    The main purpose of this patch is to simplify the code by separating
    the NMConnection from the NMSettingsConnection. We should generally
    be aware whether we handle a NMSettingsConnection or a trivial
    NMConnection instance. Now, because NMSettingsConnection no longer
    "is-a" NMConnection, this distinction is apparent.

  - NMConnection is implemented as an interface and we create
    NMSimpleConnection instances whenever we need a real instance.
    In GLib, interfaces have a performance overhead, that we needlessly
    pay all the time. With this change, we no longer require
    NMConnection to be an interface. Thus, in the future we could compile
    a version of libnm-core for the daemon, where NMConnection is not an
    interface but a GObject implementation akin to NMSimpleConnection.

  - In the previous implementation, we cannot treat NMConnection immutable
    and copy-on-write.
    For example, when NMDevice needs a snapshot of the activated
    profile as applied-connection, all it can do is clone the entire
    NMSettingsConnection as a NMSimpleConnection.
    Likewise, when we get a NMConnection instance and want to keep
    a reference to it, we cannot do that, because we never know
    who also references and modifies the instance.
    By separating NMSettingsConnection we could in the future have
    NMConnection immutable and copy-on-write, to avoid all unnecessary
    clones.

3d2da8cd05 core/dbus: stop NMDBusManager and reject future method calls
During shutdown, we will need to still iterate the main loop
to do a coordinated shutdown. Currently we do not, and we just
exit, leaving a lot of objects hanging.

If we are going to fix that, we need during shutdown tell
NMDBusManager to reject all future operations.

Note that property getters and "GetManagerObjects" call is not
blocked. It continues to work.

Certainly for some operations, we want to allow them to be called even
during shutdown. However, these have to opt-in.

This also fixes an uglyness, where nm_dbus_manager_start() would
get the set-property-handler and the @manager as user-data. However,
NMDBusManager will always outlife NMManager, hence, after NMManager
is destroyed, the user-data would be a dangling pointer. Currently
that is not an issue, because
  - we always leak NMManager
  - we don't run the mainloop during shutdown

4672499b95 core: fix bus initialization order
We currently start the bus manager only after the creation of a
NMManager because the NMManager is needed to handle set-property bus
calls. However, objects created by NMManager
(e.g. NMDnsSystemdResolved) need a bus connection and so their
initialization currently fail.

To fix this, split nm_dbus_manager_start() in two parts: first only
create the connection and acquire the bus.  After this step the
NMManager can be set up. In the second step, set NMManager as the
set-property handler and start exporting objects on the bus.

GVariant is immutable and can nicely be shared and cached.
Cache the property variants. This makes getting the properties
faster, at the expense of using some extra memory.

The time savings are small, but that is because caching mostly speeds up
the GetManagedObjects calls, and that is only a small part of the entire
nmcli call from client side.

5cd9340f83 dbus: disable all but EXTERNAL D-Bus authentication for private sockets
We use a private D-Bus socket for example for DHCP clients to report back
at unix:path=/var/run/NetworkManager/private-dhcp.

By default, gdbus will enable the authentication mechanisms EXTERNAL
and DBUS_COOKIE_SHA1. However, DBUS_COOKIE_SHA1 requires a /root/.dbus-keyrings
directory, which is not available to NetworkManager as it is started with
ProtectHome=read-only. And writing to /root would be a bad idea anyway.

This leads to a warning

  NetworkManager[10962]: Error adding entry to keyring: Error creating directory “/root/.dbus-keyrings”: Read-only file system

Disable all but the EXTERNAL mechanism.

297d4985ab core/dbus: rework D-Bus implementation to use lower layer GDBusConnection API
Previously, we used the generated GDBusInterfaceSkeleton types and glued
them via the NMExportedObject base class to our NM types. We also used
GDBusObjectManagerServer.

Don't do that anymore. The resulting code was more complicated despite (or
because?) using generated classes. It was hard to understand, complex, had
ordering-issues, and had a runtime and memory overhead.

This patch refactors this entirely and uses the lower layer API GDBusConnection
directly. It replaces the generated code, GDBusInterfaceSkeleton, and
GDBusObjectManagerServer. All this is now done by NMDbusObject and NMDBusManager
and static descriptor instances of type GDBusInterfaceInfo.

This adds a net plus of more then 1300 lines of hand written code. I claim
that this implementation is easier to understand. Note that previously we
also required extensive and complex glue code to bind our objects to the
generated skeleton objects. Instead, now glue our objects directly to
GDBusConnection. The result is more immediate and gets rid of layers of
code in between.
Now that the D-Bus glue us more under our control, we can address issus and
bottlenecks better, instead of adding code to bend the generated skeletons
to our needs.

Note that the current implementation now only supports one D-Bus connection.
That was effectively the case already, although there were places (and still are)
where the code pretends it could also support connections from a private socket.
We dropped private socket support mainly because it was unused, untested and
buggy, but also because GDBusObjectManagerServer could not export the same
objects on multiple connections. Now, it would be rather straight forward to
fix that and re-introduce ObjectManager on each private connection. But this
commit doesn't do that yet, and the new code intentionally supports only one
D-Bus connection.
Also, the D-Bus startup was simplified. There is no retry, either nm_dbus_manager_start()
succeeds, or it detects the initrd case. In the initrd case, bus manager never tries to
connect to D-Bus. Since the initrd scenario is not yet used/tested, this is good enough
for the moment. It could be easily extended later, for example with polling whether the
system bus appears (like was done previously). Also, restart of D-Bus daemon isn't
supported either -- just like before.

Note how NMDBusManager now implements the ObjectManager D-Bus interface
directly.

Also, this fixes race issues in the server, by no longer delaying
PropertiesChanged signals. NMExportedObject would collect changed
properties and send the signal out in idle_emit_properties_changed()
on idle. This messes up the ordering of change events w.r.t. other
signals and events on the bus. Note that not only NMExportedObject
messed up the ordering. Also the generated code would hook into
notify() and process change events in and idle handle, exhibiting the
same ordering issue too.
No longer do that. PropertiesChanged signals will be sent right away
by hooking into dispatch_properties_changed(). This means, changing
a property in quick succession will no longer be combined and is
guaranteed to emit signals for each individual state. Quite possibly
we emit now more PropertiesChanged signals then before.
However, we are now able to group a set of changes by using standard
g_object_freeze_notify()/g_object_thaw_notify(). We probably should
make more use of that.

Also, now that our signals are all handled in the right order, we
might find places where we still emit them in the wrong order. But that
is then due to the order in which our GObjects emit signals, not due
to an ill behavior of the D-Bus glue. Possibly we need to identify
such ordering issues and fix them.

Numbers (for contrib/rpm --without debug on x86_64):

- the patch changes the code size of NetworkManager by
  - 2809360 bytes
  + 2537528 bytes (-9.7%)

- Runtime measurements are harder because there is a large variance
  during testing. In other words, the numbers are not reproducible.
  Currently, the implementation performs no caching of GVariants at all,
  but it would be rather simple to add it, if that turns out to be
  useful.
  Anyway, without strong claim, it seems that the new form tends to
  perform slightly better. That would be no surprise.

  conditions, doesn't give a large difference. On my system they
  consume about 19MB RSS. It seems that the new version has a
  slightly smaller RSS size.

a1f37964f0 core: rename "nm-bus-manager.h" to "nm-dbus-manager.h"
The next commit will completely rework NMBusManager and replace
NMExportedObject by a new type NMDBusObject.

Originally, NMDBusObject was added along NMExportedObject to ease
the rework and have compilable, intermediate stages of refactoring. Now,
I think the new name is better, because NMDBusObject is very strongly related
to the bus manager and the old name NMExportedObject didn't make that
clear.

I also slighly prefer the name NMDBusObject over NMBusObject, hence
for consistancy, also rename NMBusManager to NMDBusManager.

This commit only renames the file for a nicer diff in the next commit.
It does not actually update the type name in sources. That will be done
later.

02370be7f3 core: rename NMDBusManager to NMBusManager
Our gdbus generated types use the same names as their corresponding
"real" types, but with "NM" changed to "NMDBus".

Unfortunately, that means that introspection/nmdbus-manager.c (the
generated type for src/nm-manager.c) uses the same type name as the
entirely unrelated src/nm-dbus-manager.c.

Fix this by removing the "d" from src/nm-dbus-manager.c. (We could

6fcc1deee0 core: add an NMExportedObject base class
Add NMExportedObject, make it the base class of all D-Bus-exported
types, and move the nm-properties-changed-signal logic into it. (Also,
make NMSettings use the same properties-changed code as everything
else, which it was not previously doing, presumably for historical
reasons).

(This is mostly just shuffling code around at this point, but
NMExportedObject will be more important in the gdbus port, since
gdbus-codegen doesn't do a very good job of supporting objects that
export multiple interfaces [as each NMDevice subclass does, for
example], so we will need more glue/helper code in NMExportedObject
then.)

3452ee2a0e all: rename nm-glib-compat.h to nm-glib.h, use everywhere
Rather than randomly including one or more of <glib.h>,
<glib-object.h>, and <gio/gio.h> everywhere (and forgetting to include
"nm-glib-compat.h" most of the time), rename nm-glib-compat.h to
nm-glib.h, include <gio/gio.h> from there, and then change all .c
files in NM to include "nm-glib.h" rather than including the glib
headers directly.

(Public headers files still have to include the real glib headers,
since nm-glib.h isn't installed...)

Also, remove glib includes from header files that are already
including a base object header file (which must itself already include
the glib headers).

dd0e198955 include: add nm-dbus-compat.h
Add a file containing the defines like DBUS_INTERFACE_DBUS from
dbus-shared.h, and use it from the gdbus-using files.

Also, convert a bunch of other places that were previously hardcoding
the string values to use the defines instead, and fix the ifcfg-rh
plugin to properly namespace its own D-Bus-related defines.

9b07ea77b8 dbus-manager: harden registering/unregistering object
Saw some g_warning() about g_object_weak_unref() trying to unref a non
registed reference. While this does not fix it, let's assert that
situation a step earlier to ease debugging.

Also, move g_object_weak_ref() closer to adding the object into the
@exported hash.

99465a34ca dbus-manager: refactor singleton getter dropping g_once_init_enter()
The class itself is not thread-safe, so no need for guarding
the creation with g_once_init_*().

Also, assert against multiple creation and log a line when
creating the singleton. The getter is now more similar to what
is created by NM_DEFINE_SINGLETON_GETTER().

1208c0dd13 dbus: destroy singleton instance of NMDBusManager on exit
Don't have the singleton instance of NMDBusManager owned by
the main function. Instead use NM_DEFINE_SINGLETON_DESTRUCTOR()
which also logs what's happening.

3bcd1c7495 dbus: fix NMRUNDIR permissions on create
This is really a no-op because the directory will be created by
nm_main_utils_check_pidfile() anyway, but make sure the permissions
are synchronized.  Now that resolv.conf is symlink into NMRUNDIR,
if normal users don't have permissions to read NMRUNDIR then
DNS won't work.

3bfb163a74 all: consistently include config.h
config.h should be included from every .c file, and it should be
included before any other include. Fix that.

(As a side effect of how I did this, this also changes us to
consistently use "config.h" rather than <config.h>. To the extent that
it matters [which is not much], quotes are more correct anyway, since
we're talking about a file in our own build tree, not a system
include.)

1ac3a1de23 core/dbus: log messages in nm-dbus-manager.c with "TRACE" priority
The messages logged by nm-dbus-manager.c are not very useful, but amount to
a significant part of DEBUG logging. Log those messages with the lower TRACE priority.
